Week 3: Niche Meshing

I am an avid subscriber of podcasts large and small and dealing with a plethora of different topics. One such topic is the area of technology. I enjoy many in this area, one in particular This Week In Tech, I listened to and through it I found interest in a much larger public sphere. During the most recent episode, while listening I heard many references to president Obama's policies. While I'm not big on politics, I did find the discussion to be quite interesting. The discussion became, what was the necessary plan of action to fix our current recession. The consensus was that government needed to incubate small businesses. This was an issue not particularly dealing with Technology that I was hearing about through this very extreme niche. As a result of this information I immediately found articles on the SOTU and recent political decisions that effected small businesses, I was now aware and cared about something that I had never previously had an interest in. This is the power of what I'm calling Liberal Fragmentation. What I mean is that if the niche had stayed rigidly on point and not spiraled off into a political discussion, I never would have had any interest whatsoever in this far more important matter.

  1. Interesting view. I just wrote about how niche public spheres should stick to their own subjects. I think that certain "trivial" like Tiger Woods ect can be important but only in their venue. Heidi Monday (Montag is german for monday)can be important on TMZ and leave it there. But I never thought about it that way. If niche PS are all one topic how can we see the relationship of the subject to the rest of the world? Good point!

  2. This is the second blog that talks about TWiT on here. Now I am really intrigued on finding out about it and the new technology that it puts out there. It’s amazing that within our own classes blogs we can find common interests in such a small forum. I also find that I can listen to Leo Laporte on KFI AM 640 on the weekends. http://www.kfi640.com/pages/LeoLaporte.html?feed=128837&article=444335
