Week 1: Tv and America

It came up as we where talking about it in class and I feel like Tv is putting America in a spot where we are having different trends and outlooks on our lives. On Tv you can see where the stations are starting to care about ratings more then then are about what actually matters. "There is a concern that the media don't care about the quality of material in the public sphere. They simply want to make money" (Mckee pg.3) I see that this is turn I mean i turn on the Tv and all I can see or hear about is Tiger Woods or about the hills girl getting plastic surgery.
Now I will admit I'm not really all that into the news but I do try and stay up on current events but even to me I feel like try Tv networks just try and stretch any story out to get the ratings and money from it. From what I could tell it works, As I used to walk around my high school campus I did not hear talk about the latest news about about what was going on in "I love new york". I also feel like the quality of Tv is going down the drains, before Tv would broadcast the idea of family values now you can not really turn on anything without seeing an image about drugs, sex, drinking, etc...
We went from leave it to beaver to jersey shore.

  1. I agree with you that TV stations are caring more about the ratings than important issues facing our world today. What makes me mad is when news stations do the same thing. They add famous people issues to the news instead of just focusing on real news. I can recall years back news stations were very professional and only talked about country and worldly important issues and hardly ever focused on issues dealing with famous people like they do now. Even the anchors have become unprofessional. They are laid back and give their own opinion on the news they are reporting about. Back in the days none of this was allowed, it was all professional. Now news channels are more concerned about the ratings they get, and depending on the ratings is how/what they present to the public regardless of how professional it is or factual. It upsets me that the news channels have lowered the standard of profession. I feel that they should be the only ones delivering true and factual issues in a professional matter which enables us be educated on real issues and real facts.
