WEEK 3: There she goes slidin down tha pole....

Pole Dancing! Taboo vs Fitness, pleasurable performance vs excercise, seedy club vs your living room. Who decided where and when to talk about such a taboo and socially degraded art. I found a blog dealing with pole dancing as a fitness. Being a fitness pole dancer myself, I found the blog not only interesting but upliftinf to all those that share my passion. A modernist would find such a blog trivial and otherwise degrading to the public sphere. However, I disagree. I understand better what the professor was saying about how the class probably would not fit into either a modernist or post-modernist category. Generally I take a more modernist view of trivia in the public sphere but now Im not so sure. In this niche public pole dance forum these women are coming together to talk about a common interest....but not sex. Such is the general association with pole dancers. In class we discussed that subjects being discussed in the public forums today can be considered trivia but myself and a few other students said that the information in the PS being considered "trivia" depends largely on the venue. People at this POLE DANCE FORUM consider their art to be anything but. As far as this forum deteriorating the more...shall we say..."serious issues in the PS" I revert back once again to class discussion. People only go to blogs and things like that if the topic is interesting to them. I dont think that the niche public spheres are deterorating "important issues" just as long as they stay in their appropriate venues. You dont watch ADULT SWIM for updates on Haiti relief. And I would not want to see a fitness pole dance competition on CNN.
